5:02 a.m.: "Measure Angus" Sub-committee Hunting for Speakers
The last forum on Alameda's Tartan-limiting "Measure Angus," held in 1898, was a lively event well-attended by the townspeople. Although fiery and sometimes pointed arguments were made, in the end, everyone joined hands to tar and feather the quote-unquote facilitator and shove him onto the next streetcar headed for Berkeley. The tintype above is the only official record of the meeting. Although the image pretty much tells the whole fair and balanced story, a vocal minority of uppity newcomers have had the gall to claim that we need yet another forum on "Measure Angus," so the same old issues can be rehashed one more time.
To that end, the "Measure Angus" sub-committee is soliciting public suggestions for speakers to present, at a public forum on "Measure Angus," the facts, benefits and limitations of "Measure Angus," in the context of bagpipe "music" and the Scottish Housing Element. Please submit the suggested speaker’s name, kilt size, contact information, interests, so-called experience, quote-unquote qualifications, proof of medical insurance, and name of next of kin, in writing, by Friday, June 29, 2007 to: Aithbhreac Auchmuty, Haggis and Kilts Director, City of Alameda, Haggis & Kilts Dept., 2263, Santa Clara Avenue, Room 390, Alameda, CA 94501-4477 OR e-mail:
aauchmuty@haggis.kilts.ci.alameda.ca.us
The sub-committee will review the suggestions and select potential speakers at its next committee meeting, which has yet to be scheduled. The sub-committee will present its final recommendations for the forum to the Haggis Board in a public hearing that provides opportunity for community input. Notice of the Haggis Board hearing will be given when the date is set.

Hello! I am a new reader of your blog and a new resident to Alameda. I came across your blog while seaching for online news and/or information on noise in Alameda. I am hoping that you might be albe to point me in the right direction. The noise I am interested in reducing is the noise from car stereos with booming bass (and to a lesser extent, motorcycle enigne noise). I very interested in working to reduce it (it is driving me crazy). Anyway, as a Alamedian, I an hoping you can help me out and let me know if you are aware of others like me who are working toward noise reduction. Thanks!

I think that Tom Pavletic was very concerned about this issue and mounting a campaign against the terrible noise over-running the island. Boom cars I believe the kids call them. I guess that's why he likes living behind walls. As a perennial candidate for a public office, tracking him down shouldn't be too troublesome.
Yes, Marteen, these so-called boom cars are an OURTRAGE! After being ROBBED of a seat on the hospital board, DESPITE his exalted status as First Among the Losers, I agree that Tom Pavletic is definitely your man. This could be the very issue that catapults him from 6.7% to 6.8% of the popular vote in the next election!

Friend, if you have something to say, just say it outright. The whole snaky thing is not very respectful. Can a person have a problem with rude behavior, ask for some advice, and not have someone respond with juvenile responses? I live in Alameda and want to make it a better place. Noise from cars and motorcycles are just a couple of things neighbors can talk about and act on.
I was hoping for more of a friendly response.

Sorry, Marteen, but friendliness is a luxury when you're at war, and Alameda is AT WAR. We're under attack by Squirrels and Scotsmen, which are far bigger threats than so-called boom cars and loud motorcycles. There are spies, infiltrators and conspirators everywhere, so we right-thinking Alamedans must be constantly vigilant. If that means a few feelings get hurt along the way, then so be it. There's only so much we can do to accommodate everybody's emotional sensitivities.
If you're still interested in pursuing the boom car issue, I suggest you contact the Alameda Police Department about enforcement. I believe there are already laws on the books about disturbing the peace.
In the mean time, just thank your lucky stars that the fanatical minority of anti-"Measure Angus" people haven't gotten their way yet. If they ever do, you'll be kept up all night, every night by the constant sound of something far worse than you could ever imagine: BAGPIPES!
I wish SOMEONE would do something about those darn thumping car stereos. I'm too busy to do anything myself, but someone else should hold a public meeting and petition the mayor to crack down on all the kids who are rolling around town like runaway marching band drums.
Marlene,
I'm sure I hate the noise created by those kids playing their crazy new music just as much as you do, but I can't agree that having the mayor give them crack is the answer.
I'm sure if the kids were playing Yanni we wouldn't be having this conversation.
